At age 40 you can no longer dress like you did at
25. But at the same time you don’t have to look like you are 65! It is a
slippery slope when you turn 40 because you are no longer a young woman but you
are certainly not old either. Whether you like to think of yourself as mature,
sophisticated, experienced or something else, when you pass your 40th
birthday you need to reevaluate your look and there is a very good chance that
a style makeover needs to take place.
How often were you told “act your age” when you were
growing up? When it comes to style knowing how you should be looking is not
simple but one thing for sure is that you know you should not be dressing
exactly the same as your 16 or 18 year old daughter!
What you want is to look classy and elegant but not
old and frumpy. We have all seen those ladies who are trying so hard to look
young at 40something that they look old. We have also seen those women who look
old well before their time.
Wait a minute! For many women their 40s is one of
the best times in their lives because their children are growing up and they
now have more time to devote to their careers and their personal pursuits, not
to mention their partners. Now it is their time to shine!
What then does a style transformation at the magical
age of 40 involve? First we should tell you what you should not be doing at 40.
Do
Not
-It is time to put away the miniskirts once you turn
40. No matter how attractive your legs are retire them.
-If you were always a girl that followed trends then
it is time to let that go too. Not only is it for the younger females but it
can be costly on your clothing budget!
-Do not overdo your makeup in order to cover crow’s
feet, wrinkles, blotchy skin or brown spots. Too much makeup can be just as
bad, if not worse, then too little. It can make every flaw stand out- big time.
This is especially the case if you use mineral cosmetics.
-Do not attempt to hide your shape under clothes
that are baggy or ill fitting, even if you wish you weighed less. Clothing that
does not fit properly can make you look larger and it is very unappealing.
-Do not choose the same makeup colors that you did
in your 20s or 30s. Just as your body changes and new clothing choices are necessary;
the same is true with your face.
What then should you do once you pass the 40 mark?
The answer is plenty!
Do
-You can look smashing at 40 but realize that you
have changed physically and work with the changes not against them to choose
flattering pieces for your wardrobe.
-By the time you reach 40 you know what you like and
what you do not like. Clothes make a great deal of difference but so do the
accessories that you pair with them. Choose signature accessories to complement
your outfits. Examples include a certain type of earrings, bracelets or footwear or bold colored scarves. Experiment
with your signature to find what suits you the best.
-Knee length skirts are the most flattering length
of skirts for 40something ladies. Even if you have always preferred pencil
skirts give A-line skirts a try as they flatter most figures.
-If you have always preferred dark colors and black
is one of your staple colors for clothing consider dialing the darkness down a
notch, especially for your upper body. You need to bring more white and more
light to your face. Maybe you can compromise and continue to wear your black
and navy blue pants and skirts but wear more pink, lavender, yellow, cream and light
blue closer to your face.
-The same can be said for your hair. As you get
older you need to lighten up your look and enliven it. Get a new haircut that
flatters your face shape and calls attention to your best features such as your
beautiful eyes, your high cheekbones or your amazing whites. Lightening the
color would help as well. If you do not want to color your hair then try some
subtle highlights around your face.
Making your appearance over following your 40th
birthday is not as tedious as you may think and it can actually be fun if you
approach it in that manner. Celebrate your changing appearance as you blow out
the 40 candles on your cake!
